On 6–7 March, SIPRI hosted a symposium to explore different perspectives on and opportunities for strengthening security cooperation between the Nordic countries and Japan.

Titled ‘Bridging Regions: Nordic–Japan Security Cooperation in Uncertain Times’, the event brought together experts, policymakers and scholars from Denmark, Finland, Japan, Norway and Sweden.

Discussions took place against the backdrop of global uncertainties produced by the second Trump administration, intensifying rivalry between the United States and China, and evolving Sino–Russian relations. Participants examined the security implications these have for the Nordic region and Japan and compared threat perceptions. Additionally, they explored opportunities to strengthen Nordic–Japanese security cooperation and the challenges involved.
