LOTTA HARBOM AND PETER WALLENSTEEN

Summary

In 2005 there were 17 major armed conflicts in 16 locations. No interstate conflicts were active in 2005, for the second year running, and Asia was the region with the highest number of conflicts. Since the end of the cold war, there have been 57 major armed conflicts. There has been a steady decline in the number of conflicts since 1999, and the figure for 2005 is the lowest for the entire post-cold war period.
