| New SIPRI data—Multilateral peace operations |
|
This month SIPRI released new data on multilateral peace operations. A topical backgrounder summarizes the key findings of the new data along with important developments related to multilateral peace operations during 2023. The launch also includes six visualizations that capture trends in the data and an infographic map. In 2023, 63 multilateral peace operations were active in 37 countries or territories around the world. This was one operation less than in 2022. The largest number of multilateral peace operations, 20, were conducted by the United Nations.

| New video series from the Stockholm Forum |
|
Following the recent Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development, which brought over 400 participants from 40 countries and 70 partner organizations to Stockholm, SIPRI is pleased to launch a new video series. The series of interviews, recorded during the Forum, offers diverse perspectives on the challenges of a divided world and how to overcome them. In addition, recordings of the plenary sessions that took place during the Forum are now available. The sessions explore the various aspects of this year’s theme ‘On the Edge: Navigating a Changing World’.

| SIPRI Yearbook 2023 translated into Chinese |
|
This month, SIPRI was pleased to announce that the Chinese translation of SIPRI Yearbook 2023 is available. This translation gives Chinese-speaking audiences access to crucial insights on global security and arms control matters. The translation has been made possible through the generous support extended by the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport.

| SIPRI and FES co-host climate, peace and security policy briefings in Berlin |
|
On 2 May, SIPRI and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) successfully convened a roundtable discussion on climate, environment, peace and security. The event marked the occasion of a visit to Berlin by three members of the SIPRI–FES Latin America network, which issued a report earlier this year about climate justice in Latin America. In addition to the event, members from the Latin America network, as well as SIPRI and FES researchers, held policy briefings with the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

| SIPRI and the African Development Bank form new partnership |
|
On 8 May, SIPRI and the African Development Bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen their collaboration in understanding and addressing fragility, insecurity and climate-related challenges in Africa. The agreement—signed at the 2024 Stockholm Forum—further strengthens the ongoing collaboration between the organizations. The partnership draws on the dedication of both organizations to address the factors that drive fragility and insecurity, and to promote actions that prevent conflicts and build resilience, including to climate shocks and impacts.

| Burning Ground: Tackling Climate Change and Conflict in South-central Somalia |
|
Somalia is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, in part because of the enduring effects of over three decades of violent conflict. This report presents findings from two projects led by the International Organization for Migration in Somalia that exemplify how climate action can be used as a platform for reducing violent conflict over natural resources; fostering cross-clan collaboration on climate-smart infrastructure and nature-based solutions; and forging or strengthening relationships between formal authorities and rural communities. The report offers lessons for climate action and peacebuilding in Somalia and in other fragile and conflict-affected areas.

| Assessing the Effectiveness of European Union Civilian CSDP Missions Involved in Security Sector Reform: The Cases of Afghanistan, Mali and Niger |
|
This report explores the contributions that the European Union’s civilian Common Security and Defence Policy missions involved in Security Sector Reform (SSR) have made to peace. The report does so by looking at three case studies: EUPOL Afghanistan (2007–2016), EUCAP Sahel Mali (2014–) and EUCAP Sahel Niger (2012–2024). All three have engaged in civilian SSR activities amid ongoing armed conflict, and operated in broader national and international counterinsurgency contexts. The report concludes with a number of recommendations aimed at EU member states and EU CSDP missions.

| Climate, Peace and Security Fact Sheet: Myanmar (2024) |
|
This Climate, Peace and Security Fact Sheet is focused on Myanmar and the series of conflict- and climate-related issues that face the country. The fact sheet offers a range of recommended actions for the international community to address these issues effectively. Myanmar is home to one of the highest concentrations of people vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, with 40 per cent of the population residing in low-lying and coastal regions. Following a military takeover in 2021, the establishment of the State Administration Council was met with broad popular resistance, retriggering confrontations with ethnic armed organizations and local anti-junta militias. Conflict has exacerbated the country’s vulnerability to climate change and environmental degradation.
