UN arms embargo on Haiti

The UNSC imposed an arms embargo on Haiti in 2022. It banned all supplies of arms and related materiel to individuals and entities. In 2023 it was modified to an arms embargo on transfers of small arms and light weapons to any non-government individuals and entities and in 2024 this was expanded to include arms and related equipment of all types. The embargo is time limited.

In October 2022 the UN Security Council adopted unanimously Security Council Resolution 2653 in response to the extremely high levels of gang violence in Haiti. The resolution imposed several measures including a year long embargo on the supply of weapons, ammunition and military equipment and related assistance to any individuals and entities designated by the relevant UN sanctions committee.

At the imposition of the embargo one person, a leader of a criminal gang in Haiti, was designated by the sanctions committee. In October 2023 was changed from an embargo on all arms to designated individuals, to a territorial embargo on the supply of small arms and light weapons (SALW) to Haiti, with the exemption of supplies to the Government of Haiti and UN-authorized missions. In October 2024 the ban was expanded to include arms and related equipment of all types.

The embargo its currently imposed until 18 October 2025.
