On 27 October, SIPRI, together with the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS) and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), hosted a virtual event exploring the water–energy–food nexus and its implications for climate change security.
The discussion focused on the interdependence of issues in the context of climate change and its impact on insecurity. Interdependent challenges include developing the economy, eliminating poverty, protecting the environment and fighting climate change. Water, energy and food form a security nexus that is highly sensitive and highly vulnerable. The discussion provided an opportunity for China, the Nordic countries and other countries to share their experiences and practices of proper risk assessment and precaution systems for extreme weather. They also discussed how they can reinforce their cooperation with developing countries, help each other and enhance mutual understanding and trust.
Dan Smith, SIPRI Director, provided introductory remarks, alongside Chen Dongxiao, SIIS President. Dr Florian Krampe, Senior Researcher and Director of SIPRI’s Climate Change and Risk Programme, spoke about the increasing risk of conflict and the influence climate change has on the dynamics of conflict. SIPRI was also represented by Dr Jingdong Yuan, Associate Senior Fellow, who gave concluding remarks.
