New SIPRI/Cordaid study on legitimate stability in CAR and the DRC
|
A new series of joint reports from SIPRI and the Catholic Organization for Relief and Development Aid (Cordaid) on securing legitimate stability in the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are now available. The reports coincide with the renewal of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic and the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

New study on the socio-economic impact of anti-vehicle mines in Angola |
The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), SIPRI and King’s College London have released a new study on the socio-economic impact of anti-vehicle mines (AVM) in Angola. The study outlines the socio-economic impact of AVM contamination and benefits of AVM clearance on sustainable development. The findings contribute to guiding the development of evidence-based research on the socio-economic impact of mine action. |

SIPRI hosts launch event on the Civilian CSDP Compact in Brussels |
On 13 November, SIPRI held a launch event for two policy briefs on the EU Civilian Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Compact. An expert panel discussed the research findings and explored means of embedding them in a broader and forward-looking perspective. The event took place one year after the establishment of the Civilian CSDP Compact and on the eve of the first Annual Review Conference.

On 18 November, SIPRI’s distinguished Governing Board came together at Nordiska Museet for an engaging discussion on the state of the world today—the risks and challenges, and the prospects for peace and security. For the Board, which draws on a diverse range of exceptional expertise, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. The discussion also hinted at a number reasons to be optimistic about the state of the world. |

To deliver on this commitment, the EU should follow the example of other organizations and elaborate a gender parity strategy for civilian CSDP.

When the Civilian Common Security and Defence Policy Compact was established, a commitment was made to increasing the number and share of seconded personnel in missions. The socio-economic impact of anti-vehicle mines in Angola |
The humanitarian and developmental impact of anti-vehicle mines (AVMs) is relevant in post-conflict reconstruction efforts. This pilot study describes the impact of anti-vehicle mines contamination on socio-economic development and the benefits of their clearance on sustainable development. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals serve as a framework to measure the impact of clearance on agriculture, infrastructure and access to social services.

This policy briefs explores the underlying assumptions of interventions by international non-governmental organizations and United Nations peace operations in the provision of security and justice. It compares them with the perceptions and experiences of local population in the Central African Republic and in South Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
