The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Sigrún Rawet as its new Deputy Director. Sigrún Rawet will assume her post on 10 September 2018.
‘Being a diplomat having worked on peace, development and security issues, joining SIPRI as a Deputy Director is a fantastic opportunity’, comments Sigrún Rawet.
Sigrún Rawet is the outgoing Head of the Development and Humanitarian Section at the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations (UN) in New York. Prior to this position, she was the Head of the Conflict Division at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
‘I know from my negotiations at the UN and elsewhere how important strong research and analysis is in providing facts and hard evidence, not least when it comes to sensitive issues such as peace and conflict. I look forward to combining my previous experiences into developing and taking forward SIPRI’s crucial work’, said Sigrún Rawet.
Sigrún Rawet has held various positions in the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs including in the cabinet of two Ministers for International Development Cooperation and in the Africa Department. Before joining the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, she worked for the European Commission at its regional Delegation in Mauritius as well as for a civil society organization in Kenya.
Welcoming the appointment, SIPRI’s Chair of the Governing Board Ambassador Jan Eliasson says, ‘We are extremely pleased to welcome Sigrún Rawet to SIPRI. Her impressive background, not least with the UN, EU and Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, will strengthen SIPRI to pursue its timely research on peace and security’.
Jan Eliasson comments further, ‘I would like to thank the outgoing Deputy Director Jakob Hallgren for his valuable contributions in strengthening SIPRI’s work over the course of his six-year mandate. I warmly congratulate him on his new appointment and wish him all the best in his exciting new role’.
