On 16–17 June, SIPRI held a two-day workshop on the theme ‘Priorities at the AI–Nuclear Nexus’, as part of a research project funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

Sessions were led by researchers from the SIPRI Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme and the Governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Programme, as well as invited international experts.

Discussions centred on the ways in which AI is being integrated into nuclear and conventional systems, the implications for nuclear stability, and the importance of maintaining human involvement in decision making at the AI–nuclear nexus.

Further to this, workshop participants explored approaches to regulating AI across nuclear weapons and related systems, focusing on the role of transparency and confidence-building measures. They also engaged with the fundamental aspects of operationalizing governance and defining red lines at the AI–nuclear nexus, and identified core elements in potential risk reduction frameworks.
