On 29 August SIPRI experts showcased SIPRI databases during a United Nations panel. The presentation was directed towards staff in the UN Peace and Security Pillar. Experts presented the type of data available and gave guidance on three SIPRI databases—the Arms Transfers Database, the Military Expenditure Database and the Multilateral Peace Operations Database.
The session also included a panel discussion on how data can inform political and conflict analysis. Participants explored trends in the arms trade, military expenditure and multilateral peace operations.
The event was part of the TechTalk Series, sponsored by the UN Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPO) Information Management Unit and the DPO’s Digital Enablement Team. The series explores how staff in the Peace and Security Pillar can benefit from and meet the challenges of using data, analytics, artificial intelligence and other new technologies in their daily work. The talks are designed to support the UN secretary-general’s Data Strategy and Digital Transformation Strategy of Peacekeeping.
