On 3–5 May 2024, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the United Nations Climate Security Mechanism and the Folke Bernadotte Academy hosted a UN Strategic Dialogue on Climate, Peace and Security.

The closed-door event was held at Näsby Slott, Stockholm, and brought together senior UN officials and experts to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change in conflict-affected regions. The event aimed to develop strategies for integrating climate considerations into UN peace operations, ensuring missions can effectively respond to the evolving climate-related security risks. The dialogue focused on UN mission contexts in climate-vulnerable regions such as the Horn of Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, and the Sahel.

Key participants included Special Representatives of the UN Secretary-General and Deputy Special Representatives from various UN missions, alongside Climate, Peace and Security Advisors. The dialogue underscored the necessity of climate-informed peacemaking to achieve sustainable peace.

The event was held in conjunction with the 2024 Stockholm Forum, where strategic dialogue participants attended various sessions.

About SIPRI’s work on climate change and risk

SIPRI’s work on climate change and risk provides reliable insights on how climate-related security risks evolve and how they are interlinked and interact with different social, political and economic processes. SIPRI researchers also analyse how different policy organizations are responding to these risks and provide advice on conflict-sensitive adaptation, mitigation strategies and how international efforts for sustaining peace can be achieved.
