SIPRI and FES co-host climate, peace and security policy briefings in Berlin

On 2 May, SIPRI and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) successfully convened a roundtable discussion on climate, environment, peace and security.

The event marked the occasion of a visit to Berlin by three members of the SIPRI–FES Latin America network, which issued a report earlier this year about climate justice in Latin America. Representatives from the SIPRI–FES West Africa network joined the event online. The audience included representatives of the World Food Programme, German government officials, and various specialists from think tanks and civil society organizations.

In addition to the event, members from the Latin America network, as well as SIPRI and FES researchers, held policy briefings with the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

About the project

Over the past years, SIPRI and FES have initiated three regional working groups, engaging experts in climate, environment, peace and security. These groups convened in the Horn of Africa (2018–20), West Africa (2021–23), and Latin America (2022–24), respectively. The groups collaborate in order to give regions in a post or current conflict setting an opportunity to unite and discuss issues of joint concern. Roundtable discussions, like the one outlined above, allow reflection and discussion on the outcomes and recommendations of regional working groups.
