In October, SIPRI published an extensive study on the expansion of the global space sector, referred to as ‘NewSpace’, and the risk of missile-related technology proliferation. The research culminated in two reports and a video interview with the authors.
The study, which mapped over 600 NewSpace companies across 84 states, was led by Kolja Brockmann and Lauriane Héau, researchers with SIPRI’s Dual-Use and Arms Trade Control Programme. The results of the study are outlined in a SIPRI Fact Sheet and accompanying report. These publications analyze the spread of NewSpace companies developing, testing, producing or marketing missile-related technology; and outline policy recommendations for Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) partners. Both publications are available below:
- Mapping the Spread of NewSpace Companies Developing, Testing, Producing or Marketing Missile-related Technology: A Pilot Study
- The Expansion of the NewSpace Industry and Missile Technology Proliferation Risks
In addition to the publications, the authors gave a video interview where they reflect on the results of the pilot study, explore potential next steps for the MTCR and give recommendations. The video can be viewed below or on SIPRI’s YouTube page.
About the project
