On 26 October, Dan Smith, SIPRI Director, and Dr Lora Saalman, SIPRI Associate Senior Fellow, participated in the Beijing Xiangshan Forum webinar held on the theme ‘Pursue Win–Win Cooperation, Advance Global Security Governance’.

Smith and Dr Saalman gave presentations as part of the panel on ‘Strategic Stability: Impasse and Way Out’. Smith provided an overview of security trends shaping strategic stability at the regional and global levels, as well as related SIPRI data. He stressed the importance of countries expanding engagement and mutual understanding. Dr Saalman’s Chinese-language remarks discussed China’s new technological and postural advances and how its enhanced nuclear survivability provides a platform for it to engage with countries such as the United States in strategic stability dialogues. She then provided a series of recommendations on the potential structure, location and content of these talks.
