On 28 January, SIPRI co-hosted an event on ‘Humanitarian Challenges in the Current Global Landscape—What’s Next for the 2020s?’.

Ambassador Jan Eliasson, Chair of the SIPRI Governing Board, was a key discussant together with Yves Daccord, Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and Sofia Calltorp, International Director of the Swedish Red Cross. Sigrun Rawet, SIPRI Deputy Director, moderated the discussion.

The discussion focused on the changing nature of conflict and the implications for humanitarian aid, particularly in Syria, Yemen and South Africa. Yves Daccord outlined the many challenges for humanitarian access, namely newly emerged technologies and the non-state actors that are increasingly involved in conflict.

The event was co-organized with the Swedish Red Cross and held at their headquarters in Stockholm.
