Following the launch of SIPRI's recently published book Security Activities of External Actors in Africa, SIPRI in cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission in Africa (UNECA) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) held a seminar in Addis Ababa on 23 April to present the findings of the SIPRI study and to have the topic addressed from African perspectives by regional colleagues.

The SIPRI book — covering 5 country actors and 2 intergovernmental organizations – was presented by the editors of the book, Dr Olawale Ismail and Dr Elisabeth Sköns, and one of the chapter authors, Dr Vincent Boulanin. African perspectives on external security activities in conflict-affected environments in Africa through the cases of Somalia, South Sudan and Mali were provided by speakers from Erasmus University Rotterdam, the African Union Mission for Mali and the Sahel (MISAHEL), IPSS and SIPRI. A third session addressed the challenges in the management of external security support in Africa based on a presentation from a representative of the UN Office to the African Union (UNOAU). Special thanks to the Swedish Embassy in Addis for their support and facilitation.
