In brief: SIPRI activities in September 2014

  • 8 September 2014, Stockholm
    Mark Bromley, Co-Director of the SIPRI Dual-use and Arms Trade Control Programme, spoke at a seminar organized by the United Nations Association Sweden about the ongoing parliamentary enquiry into Swedish arms export controls. Bromley made a presentation on the level of transparency in Swedish arms exports as compared to other states.

  • 15–16 September, Shanghai
    Mathieu Duchâtel, Head of the SIPRI China and Global Security Project, presented a paper on the impact of the Sunflower movement on cross-strait relations at the 11th annual conference on Europe–China relations and the Taiwan issue at the Shanghai Institutes of International Studies.

  • 16 September, Geneva
    SIPRI Researcher Helen Wilandh gave a presentation on world military expenditure at a side event organized by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom during the 27th session of the Human Rights Council.

  • 25 September, Madrid
    Neil Melvin, Head of SIPRI's Conflict and Peacebuilding in the Caucasus Project, gave a presentation entitled 'The EU and Russia: How to manage peacefully a shared neighourhood" at a conference organized by FRIDE.

  • 30 September—1 October, Vienna
    Tariq Rauf, Director of SIPRI's Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-proliferation Programme, made presentations on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and on 'United Nations Disarmament Machinery’ at a short intensive course for practitioners organized by the Vienna Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (in association with the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
