In brief: SIPRI activities for October 2013

  • 23 Oct., Stockholm
    SIPRI Researcher Kristofer Bergh gave a presentation on Arctic security to the Stockholm chapter of the Norden Association. The presentation was part of a seminar presenting the MISTRA Arctic futures programme, of which the SIPRI Arctic Futures project is a part.

  • 16 Oct., Beijing
    SIPRI Senior Researcher and head of the Military Expenditure Programme Sam Perlo-Freeman gave a series of presentations at the China Defence Science and Technology Information Center, and to students from various Beijing universities, on SIPRI's Military Expenditure database and methodology, global milex trends, and SIPRI's estimates of Chinese military expenditure.

  • 8–9 Oct., Tbilisi, Georgia
    SIPRI Senior Researcher and head of the SIPRI Arms Transfers Programme Paul Holtom attended a European Union Council Working Party on Conventional Arms Exports (COARM) regional seminar on arms export control, chairing a plenary session on the Arms Trade Treaty and a workshop to discuss the role of techical experise in export control risk assessments.

  • 7–8 Oct., Manama, Bahrain
    Sam Perlo-Freeman attended the International Institute for Strategic Studies' Middle East conference, 'Fiscal Stress, Global Military Balances and Regional Security', acting as a discussant for a paper on global trends in fiscal constraints on defence spending.

  • SIPRI Researcher Oliver Bräuner's paper, 'Beyond the Arms Embargo: EU Transfers of Defense and Dual-Use Technologies to China', was published in the September–December 2013 issue of the Journal of East Asian Studies.
