Janet Meurling—obituary

Janet Meurling, a former SIPRI librarian for over 20 years, passed away on 12 July 2016 aged 90.

Janet was born in 1925 in Sussex, England. She studied economics and political science at the London School of Economics, where she obtained a bachelor's degree. After the war she worked as a volunteer in several European countries, starting her life-long engagement for peace. In Sweden she met her husband John Meurling and they married in 1950.

In September 1969, during the early years of SIPRI, Janet began working in the SIPRI Library. The international environment suited her well and she stayed at SIPRI until her retirement in 1990. She developed great knowledge of SIPRI’s research and was appreciated for her ability to identify relevant and new literature for each research area. Janet was engaged in several peace organizations and continued to work with the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society after her retirement.

Janet is survived by her husband John, four children and several grandchildren.
