On 2–5 December, SIPRI and the European Union Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium (EUNPDC) hosted an intensive introductory course on weapons of mass destruction (WMD) non-proliferation and disarmament.
The course, titled ‘WMD Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Pathways’, was funded by the EU and was held at SIPRI in Stockholm. It brought together graduate and postgraduate students of technical disciplines and covered a comprehensive range of topics, including the fundamentals of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons; threats associated with the use of WMD; mechanisms aimed at achieving disarmament; as well as gender perspectives and career paths in this field.
The course was delivered by renowned experts from SIPRI and other European research centres, think tanks and international organizations, including Dr Stephan Klement, European External Action Service Special Advisor on the Iran Nuclear Issue. During the course, SIPRI conducted a video interview with Dr Klement, where he reflects on the key security challenges relating to Iran and its nuclear programme, and the changes that he hopes will take place.
The video can be viewed below or on SIPRI’s YouTube channel.
About the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium
The EUNPDC forms the core of a wider European network of non-proliferation and disarmament think tanks that the Consortium is responsible for promoting and coordinating. The EUNPDC is managed jointly by six institutes: the Foundation for Strategic Research, the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt, the International Affairs Institute, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation and SIPRI. The EUNPDC aims to encourage discussion on measures to combat the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems within civil society—particularly among experts, researchers and academics in the EU and third countries. The scope of activities also covers issues related to conventional weapons, including SALW. For more information about the Consortium click here.
