SIPRI hosts international conference on European security and deterrence |
On 22–23 October 2024, SIPRI hosted the eighth edition of the Stockholm Security Conference (SSC24). This year’s conference, titled ‘Deterrence. Securing Europe, Managing the Dangers’, aimed to help decision makers navigate current debates on deterrence and defence against the backdrop of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. SSC24 was attended by over 70 leading international security experts from SIPRI, national governments, think tanks, universities and civil society groups. Video interviews were conducted with a wide range of international security experts, researchers and policymakers.

SIPRI experts at UN First Committee |
SIPRI played a prominent role in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly First Committee. SIPRI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Programme co-hosted a side event on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and nuclear issues, as well as another event centred on outer space and nuclear weapons. SIPRI’s Dual-Use and Arms Trade Control Programme advised separate discussions on multilateral export control regimes and domestic export controls. SIPRI’s Governance of AI Programme co-organized a side event on responsible AI for peace and security.

SIPRI co-hosts side event to the 2024 UN biodiversity summit in Colombia |
On 29 October 2024, SIPRI co-hosted a side event to the 16th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Cali, Colombia. The event was held on the theme ‘Biodiversity, Land Use Change and the Implications for Conflict in Latin America’ and brought together a diverse group of participants from both scientific and policy backgrounds. Discussions focused on the impact of armed conflict on biodiversity, as well as strategies to secure food security in regions affected by land degradation and climate change.

SIPRI expert presents peacekeeping research at roundtable in New York |
On 21 October, SIPRI research was used to inform a roundtable discussion on the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). During the roundtable, Dr Jaïr van der Lijn, Director of the SIPRI Peace Operations and Conflict Management Programme, presented research focused on MONUSCO’s mandate renewal. The roundtable was held in New York and hosted by Belgium’s Permanent Representation to the UN.

SIPRI experts to participate in Nobel Peace Prize event |
Two leading SIPRI experts will take part in a panel on nuclear weapons organized by the Nobel Peace Prize. Dr Wilfred Wan, Director of SIPRI’s WMD Programme, and Hans M. Kristensen, Associate Senior Fellow in SIPRI’s WMD Programme and Director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, will participate in the panel ‘NUKES—How to counter the threat’ during the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. The event will be livestreamed on the Nobel Prize’s YouTube channel.

This paper identifies three strategic priorities for civilian CSDP missions: equipping missions to deliver on mandates; where possible, supporting EU candidate countries in the accession process; and enhancing the ability of missions to react and adapt to evolving needs or emerging crises.
