On 24 September, SIPRI participated in the international conference Fix the Food co-hosted by the Nobel Peace Center and the World Food Programme (WFP).

Dan Smith, SIPRI Director, was a speaker and moderated the panel discussion entitled ‘On Sustainable Food Systems and the Triple Nexus’. Smith delivered an address on how food security and peacebuilding are mutually supportive and presented evidence and results from SIPRI’s research partnership with WFP. Following the address, Smith facilitated the panel discussion with Susanna Moorehead, Chair of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Development Assistance Committee (OECD DAC), and Amira Elfadil, Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, African Union. Gunhild Stordalen, Executive Chair of EAT, provided introductory remarks to the panel.

Dr Caroline Delgado, Senior Researcher and Director of the SIPRI Food, Peace and Security Programme, was featured in a film during which she provided insights on the findings of the report ‘The World Food Programme’s Contribution to Improving the Prospects for Peace in Colombia. Carlos Scaramella, WFP Country Director in Colombia, provided an overview of the challenges facing Colombia in its peace process and how WFP is supporting these peace and stabilization efforts in the country.

The conference brought together Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, representatives of United Nations member states and international organizations, practitioners and activists with the aim to discuss the role of food security as a pathway to peace and stable societies, the wider humanitarian–development–peace nexus and how to fix the broken food systems. The event was the last of the series ‘Exploring the Nobel Peace Prize 2020’ and was held in a hybrid format in Oslo. Read more about the conference here.
