2020 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development

SIPRI is proud to announce that the 2020 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development will focus on ‘The Geopolitics of Peacebuilding’. 

The Stockholm Forum will consist of ‘Focus Days’ on 11–12 May and an ‘Open Day’ on 13 May. Focus Days participation is by invitation only. The Stockholm Forum is co-hosted by SIPRI and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

SIPRI co-hosts event on global humanitarian challenges

On 28 January, SIPRI co-hosted an event on ‘Humanitarian challenges in the current global landscape – what’s next for the 2020s?’ 

The discussion focused on the changing nature of conflict and the implications for humanitarian aid, particularly in Syria, Yemen and South Africa. The event was co-organised with the Swedish Red Cross.

Estimating the Arms Sales of Chinese Companies
A scoping study to estimate the financial value of the arms sales of companies in the Chinese arms industry suggests that China is the second-largest arms producer in the world, behind the United States and ahead of Russia. All four of the profiled companies would be ranked among the 20 largest arms-producing and military services companies globally in 2017.

The Crisis of Nuclear Arms Control and Its Impact on European Security
The collapse of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) was the most recent chapter in the erosion of the cold war-originated system of nuclear arms control. This paper examines the legacy of nuclear arms control, recent developments and the causes of the current crisis; and analyses the impact on European security. Finally, it presents options on how the European Union and its member states might become better engaged in rethinking the nuclear arms control architecture.

Framing and Responding to Climate-related Security Risks in Swedish Development Cooperation
Societies worldwide are increasingly facing security challenges posed by climate change. Development organizations are key in addressing climate-related security risks, but the work is often done in silos. This paper contributes to the research on the integration of climate-related security risks by organizations, with a case study on how the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) is framing and developing its responses.

Rapid changes in the Arctic are having a considerable impact on security. The various challenges are often examined in silos, assessing one problem at a time. However, the complexity of the risks can best be understood when these challenges are looked at in connection with each other. This paper examines the complexity of Arctic security and explores the interconnectedness between various aspects of security in the Arctic.

Arms Flows to South East Asia
The security environment of South East Asia is making more and more headlines. While old tensions remain, China’s rise as a military power and its claims on the South China Sea not only add a new element of insecurity but also draw other powers into the mix. As this paper documents, states in South East Asia have significantly increased their military spending, their arms acquisitions and their arms inventories over the past decade. This growth has outpaced the global trend.

The World Food Programme’s Contribution to Improving the Prospects for Peace in El Salvador
Now available in Spanish, this study contains detailed findings from field research in El Salvador as part of a wider knowledge partnership between SIPRI and the World Food Programme. In the light of its complex context—where humanitarian, development and peace agendas intersect—El Salvador was selected along with three other countries (Iraq, Kyrgyzstan and Mali) for this pilot phase research.
